Masonry is one of the oldest construction materials in the world that is still being practiced. All throughout history, buildings of great importance have been and continues to be constructed with brick, block and/or stone to ensure it will endure the ages. Some of the greatest contributions to architecture are masonry and this is a tradition we want to continue. In this contest, we want to see how far innovation can push a classic set of materials. What will be the next great masonry building?

requirements

Our objective is to use progressive masonry materials to design a modern masonry concept on one of the three identified sites. How well the design integrates and complements the surrounding neighbourhood will be a consideration in judging the designs. Entries will need to:

  • incorporate brick, block and stone in design [no thin veneer];
  • be predominately masonry;
  • illustrate a mid-rise (6-12 floors) multi use building with retail space at street level;
  • provide 90-120 suites ranging in size – minimum 46  to 10.5 ;
  • have minimum 2.7 m ceilings;
  • include amenities for residents [see sample abstracts for more detail];
  • assume parking to be underground, given space restrictions and by-laws, esp. in Toronto;
  • base the structure in one of three recommended locations [see below];
  • image must be prepped for landscape-oriented panel, 18 x 24 (2 max).
Toronto site:
952 Dundas Street West, Toronto, ON M6P 1Y8
Oshawa site:
66 Emma Street, Oshawa, ON L1H 1Y3
Kitchener site:

SAMPLE PROJECTS (reference)

There are many examples of mid-rise buildings which are utilizing the model of multi-use place making in their respective neighbourhoods.

DUKE is an engaging 7 storey building, located in the Junction, at Dundas and Keele.

Imagined by TAS, and created by Quadrangle Architects, DUKE is a bold gesture that brings a modern sensibility to the retro neighbourhood, but in a way that both respects and complements the existing streetscape.

The building’s articulated façade plays with geometric patterns. Cantilevered living spaces carve out intimate balconies and terraces that meet expansive glazed windows. A double-height retail space on the main floor animates Dundas West with convenient neighbourhood retail.

On the north side, DUKE stands tall, projecting a confident presence on the vibrant street. On the south side, sun-filled terraces gradually step down, creating a softer façade with unobstructed views of the Junction neighbourhood. And up top, terraces wrap around single and two-storey penthouse suites, offering a phenomenal perspective of the city.

The Neighbourhoods of Oak Park’s first phase included an inviting midrise condominium called The Renaissance. Now the second phase of Oak Park’s master plan includes another elegant midrise, The Cosmopolitan. Like its predecessor, its design effortlessly bridges the traditional and the modern exteriors that create true curb appeal within a pedestrian-friendly streetscape.
